BUSINESS MODEL

Improve agricultural efficiency through a range of low cost, easy to maintain and easy to use technologies that enable smallholder farmers to lift water and/or to efficiently apply water to the field. The technologies are manufactured and distributed by commercial players, while IDEI uses grants to fund product development, quality control and demand generation.

Annual budget

US$6.5 million FY11 (Mar-1).

Delivered to date

Reached over 1 million households making a cumulative net return over US$1 billion.  This led to savings of 4.5 billion m3 in water, 564 million litres in diesel, 603 million kWh in electricity and offset about 2.04 million tonnes of CO2.

Impact

On average customers earn $400 extra per year, which is an increase of 70-100% of their annual agriculture income.

BIG PLANS

To enable 5.5 million farmer households in India to acquire low-cost irrigation technologies by 2020.

Our investment so far

US$200k grant in unrestricted capital.
